Life for the Linear Variable Differential Transformer or LVDT began during WWII in limited use by the military for laboratory measurements. In 1946, the LVDT was commercially introduced to the world as a viable linear displacement measurement technology through a scientific article entitled “The Linear Variable Transformer” that was written by Herman Schaevitz, the founder of Schaevitz Engineering, and published by the Society for Experiment Stress Analysis.
Since then, the LVDT (sometimes referred to as a linear position sensor) has grown in popularity and is now the first choice for design and systems engineers around the world for critical and reliable linear displacement measurements in industrial, military, aerospace, sub-sea, down-hole drilling, nuclear power and process control.
Today, with the use of micro-controller-based electronics and new corrosion-resistance/high- temperature materials, LVDT technology is very competitive to other displacement sensing technologies while offering high durability and excellent cost of ownership.
